The main components for a PC are
- CPU
- RAM
- Motherboard
- Graphics Card
- Network Card (WIFI and/or LAN)
- Storage (Hard Disks, Optical Drives, Floppy Drives, Memory sticks)
- Display Device (LCD or CRT monitor)
- Input Devices (Mouse & Keyboard)
- Case & Power supply.
- Any extra peripherals or components.
The cost is dependent of many factors such as which country, if you buy on the internet etc.
One rule of thumb is YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. The more money you can spend the better computer you will get.
Tips when buying a computer.
- Investigate if what you are buying is compatible with the rest (PCIe/AGP, DDR1/2/3, CPU Socket etc)
- Read reviews on each items (See TomsHardware in Related Links)
- Shop around to get best price (take into consideration Postage costs)
- Many shops offer a better price on the internet. You may be able to order it on the internet and collect instore.
What items you should prioritise on is dependent on what you want to use the computer for.
For Games
- CPU (recommend Intel I7 or Core2 Quad/Duo)
- Motherboard that supports 1 or more PCIe2 slots, DDR2or3 RAM.
- Graphics Card
- RAM
- Power supply (500+ Watts Min, 700+ Watt Recommended)
For Multimedia (Video, Music and TV)
- Display
- CPU
- RAM
- Graphics Card
- TV Card
For Applications (Photo editing, MP3/Video editing)
- CPU
- RAM (3 Gb for x86 (32bit) 4+ Gb for x64)
- HDD
For a server (Network storage and applications)
- Network Card (Gigabit 10/100/1000)
