Katherine Hepburn

Katherine Hepburn was the epitome of American upper class women of the 1930's, She usually played strong independent women, much as did Bette Davis. She was a perfect foil for many strong actors such as Henry Fonda, Cary Grant, and Spencer Tracy. Her career spanned more than 60 years and four Oscars.

Did Katherine hepburn smoke?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I was curious about this because I saw her in the 1957 movie "Desk Set".

She was born in 1907, so she was age 50 when this was filmed. I thought she had a "smokers face", though I don't think she appeared smoking in any film I had seen; e.g., African Queen.

So I researched this- she was indeed a smoker, though she may have quit before her death at age 96.

There is at least 1 photo on the internet of her holding a cigarette, not from a film.

Towards the end of her life it is mentioned that she was in failing health, though I saw no details available about that.

After many years of smoking, it is well accepted that this has a very detrimental effect on a person's appearance, especially in the face.

Katharine [note the correct spelling of her first name] Hepburn did not have a life-long sexual attraction to other females. Her 45 year romantic affair with Spencer Tracy, as well as her much shorter dalliance with Howard Hughes, should make that obvious.

Close associate William Mann, in a publicity tour for his book, stated the following in an interview:

Q: "You say that, after some of these terrible breakups she had with the men in her life, you say, 'She would retreat to the comforting embrace of the community of women.' Did she have serious female romances?"

WM: "Absolutely. But at the same time, sex itself was never a real defining aspect of any relationship in her life, whether with men or with women. It was really about, for her, she found she preferred the companionship of women and the nurturance of women, but her great passions, even if they didn't include sex, were always reserved for men."

Why didn't Katherine Hepburn have any children?

User Avatar

Amelia Earhart never had a baby, she married and then almost right away went on a flight. I took 6 proposals for her to marry.
I assume you are referring to Amelia Earhart Putnam. As far as it is known she never had biological children. There were persistent rumors she may have adopted a boy child, who claimed to be the foster son of the Aviatrix. At the time of her disappearance she had been divorced from George Palmer Putnam, so was a divorcee, hardly an ideal foster-mother candidate.

She won three or four Oscars or academy award ( Marilyn and Jayne never won one) she entertained a lot of people in generally Highbrow roles, such as female lawyers even science fiction types-one film was a sci-fi comedy about war-industry types quite different from Rosie The Riveter! It had something to do with some sort of hazard-reduction helmet and was played as a serio-comedy about a war-industries lab or plant. -Which was totally unlike M.W.Kelloggs!

How many times has Katherine hepburn been married?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Katherine Hepburn was married only once to Ludlow Ogden Smith.

Even after their divorce, he remained quite attached to her family (much like Cary Grant's character in The Philadelphia Story, which was loosely based on Hepburn's family).

She was devoted to her partner Spencer Tracy for over 25 years. They never married as his wife would never grant him a divorce.

She never had children.

Does Katherine Hepburn have a cameo in Singin' in the Rain?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

She is not listed in the cast, and I do not recall seeing her in that film. She is my favorite actress, and this is one of my all-time favorite films, so I can't imagine having missed her on-screen.

I have wondered this for years. The actress at the beginning of the movie at the premiere is a girl being held back by two policeman. She is a dead ringer for Katherine Hepburn, yet I cannot find anything conclusive online that gives a direct yes to this question. In my opinion and looking at photos of her from that year, it is her.
