Zodiac Killer

From the inception of his crimes in Riverside county in the 1960's the Zodiac has a permanent place in the history of American serial killers. Known for his taunting letters to police and press and his bizzare costume and unbreakable ciphers, the killer has stumped the best that law enforcement has to offer. Since the publication of Robert Graysmith's New York Times bestseller 'Zodiac Unmasked' there has been a new interest in the case. Using new technology not available to the original detectives, the case has been resurrected in hope of a solution. One of the most recognized killers of our time, Zodiac has spawned no less than three other killers taking his name as their own.

Asked by Wiki User

For the few that actually saw him and lived to tell their stories described him as a white male, approximate height of 5'9" to 5'11", stocky build, age 35 to 39 years old and had a lumbering gait. The Lake Berryessa victim Bryan Hartnell was the only surviving witness to see him in full costume. Black clothes, black hood over his head with eyeholes, black boots and a gunsight emblem (or crosshair) on his chest.

July 4th surviving victim Michael Mageau picked suspect Arthur Leigh Allen out a photo lineup 20 years after his attack.

When did the Zodiac Killer happen?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

67 years old.

I depends on who you think the Zodiac was. If you go by the bestselling book by Robert Graysmith then the Zodiac would be 77 years old. Arthur Leigh Allen, born in Hawaii and lived in Vallejo, California at the time the murders began.

Recently there was DNA testing on some envelopes from some of Allen's correspondence but it did not match Allen's. But there was no proof that he licked his own envelopes personally. Allen had a nearly genuis IQ, and although DNA was not possible when the Zodiac crimes were commited, Allen was smart enough to not put anything of a personal nature that could in anyway lead back to him.

After Graysmith's book was published, police were getting ready to bring him in when he suffered a fatal heart attact. Graysmith puts out a pretty strong argument for Allen being the killer. In fact, in his research he found that Allen used to visit Southern California on a regular basis, and his visits south align with several murders around L.A.

What years did the Zodiac Killer kill people?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The first Zodiac attack killed Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday on Lake Herman Road in Benicia, California on December 20, 1968. The last officially recognized murder was of San Francisco Yellow Cab driver Paul Lee Stine on October 11, 1969. However, Zodiac claimed responsibility for the murder of Cheri Jo Bates on October 30, 1966 in Riverside, California. That was the first ever unsolved murder in the history of Riverside. The Riverside Police Department does not believe that was done by Zodiac. However the RPD's prime suspect was cleared through DNA testing. There are 5 confirmed Zodiac murders but in a letter sent in 1974 Zodiac claimed 37 victims.

Was the Zodiac Killer a visionary killer?

User Avatar

No he wasn't because he was an Organized serial killer. A paranoid schizophrenic would be an Unorganized Serial Killer. The Zodiac was methodical and meticulous in his killing.

Where did the serial killer Zodiac Killer operate?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

An FBI geographical profiler placed the Zodiac's home in or close by the northern California town of Vallejo, making Arthur Leigh Allen a serious suspect. However Allen's handwriting, fingerprints and palm print did not match the evidence in the case. In 2003 a partial DNA profile of the Zodiac was obtained and it's comparison showed that Allen was not the Zodiac, someone that he denied being until his dying day in 1992.

There are over 2,500 suspects that have been suggested as having been the Zodiac. Only Arthur Leigh Allen has ever been served with a search warrant - and he was not arrested! No one has EVER been arrested, much less tried in court in this case. So it is impossible to know for certain where the Zodiac Killer lived.

When was the last letter from the Zodiac Killer?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Zodiac sent zero letters to the SFPD. All of his letters were addressed to newspapers, a Los Angeles television station and some individuals including famed attorney Melvin Belli. There was a phone call to the Oakland PD by someone claiming to be the Zodiac on October 22, 1969. The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper received by far the most of Zodiac's correspondence.

Where did the Zodiac Killer grow up?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The original Zodiac killer was never caught so insight into his childhood is difficult at best. The most likely suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen of Vallejo, CA, had a strained and difficult relationship with his mother. His father, an Air Force officer, sustained injuries at work that left him a shadow of his former self. This is a common enough scenario with violent criminals, a strong or domineering mother and quiet or meek father. But compared to other serial killers, Allen's childhood was a breeze.

Who was believed to be the Zodiac Killer?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are many theories about who the Zodiac killer is but no one has been officially identified. In the 1960s, when these crimes were committed, much of the forensic sciences that we rely on today did not exist. Making investigation more difficult at that time was the difficulty involved in timely communication between the jurisdictions where the crimes were committed.

In 2002, the San Francisco police reopened the case to perform DNA tests on the flaps of envelopes confirmed to be from the killer, in particular, from the letter containing the piece of blood stained cloth identified as having to been cut from a victim's shirt. The DNA could not positively identify any of the primary suspects and conclusively ruled out three of the main suspects. The case is still open.

The Zodiac is a man with deep spiritual generational wounds. His murders were well planned, he had his weapons, location, used a disguise, and had a wonderful time taunting police and public alike. There is no doubt that the Zodiac was highly intelligent. Three of his coded messages sent to police and newspapers have still not been cracked by the FBI. This man left nothing to chance. These kinds of organized killers are some of the hardest to catch.
The Zodiac killer was a serial killer in the state of California. The Zodiac murdered victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969 but crimes in Riverside and Santa Barbara in the south part of California were concluded to be his. Persons have come forward and state to have seen him in the Riverside area and in the Nevada state in multiple sightings throughout the state.

He sent coded messages to the police and claimed that his name was in the last message he sent. As in 2011, the message was decoded and the main suspect turned up to be the Zodiac Killer. He name was Arthur Leigh Allen. Before the message was decoded, there was some circumstantial evidence like the brand of typewriter used to type a letter sent to the Riverside Police Department from Cheri Jo Bates's killer was identified as a Royal with an elite type, the same brand of typewriter which was found during a search of Allen's residence in February 1991, he owned and wore a Zodiac brand wristwatch and also Allen lived in Vallejo and worked minutes away from where one of the first victims lived and where one of the killings took place.

Former SFPD Inspector David Toschi echoed Conway, "Mr. Allen was a very, very good suspect. We looked into Mr. Allen very closely." The article further stated that police "focused on Mr. Allen in 1971 when relatives and friends told police he was acting erratically," and that "Mr. Allen had reportedly told some people that he was the Zodiac killer." Neither of the statements was entirely accurate, and the sudden reference to the suspect as "Mr. Allen" seemed an obligatory gesture to the dead. Finally the police confirmed 5 dead, 2 injured from the number he claimed which were 37 victims. That confection was not backed up. Arthur Leigh Allen died in 1992 almost 20 years before his message was decoded.
The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who operated in Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Zodiac murdered victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted. Numerous suspects have been named by law enforcement and amateur investigators but no conclusive evidence has surfaced. The killer coined the name "Zodiac" for himself in a series of taunting letters sent to the local Bay Area press.

Where can you find information about the Zodiac Killer?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who operated in Northern California. The first murders were on December 20, 1968. He coined his name in a series of taunting letters he sent to the press until 1974. His letters included four cryptograms, three of which have yet to be solved.

The Zodiac murdered five known victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa (near Napa), and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted, and no connections between them have ever been discovered; they appear to have been victims of opportunity, nothing more. In his letters Zodiac claimed 37 kills.

While it is often claimed that the Zodiac knew his victims, there has never been any credible evidence to suggest this was true. Numerous others have been thought to be Zodiac victims, although the evidence is scant at best. The killer's identity remains unknown. The San Francisco Police Department marked its investigation "inactive" in April 2004 but reopened the case in 2007. The case remains open in other jurisdictions.

How did the Zodiac Killer kill his victims?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

since the zodiac killer's identity is unknown, we might never learn the reasons that moved him to do such things. He had to suffer some mental illness clinically speaking.

But if he is dead he did not leave a bragging note confessin after death so everyone knew who fooled the police until the end which makes me believe he had a violent death that not necesarily had to to with his serial killings.

What happened to Zodiac Killer?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

///There are few reasons why a serial killer stops killing. Death or a serious illness, incarceration for other crimes, moving from the area, or they actually just get too old and finally fade away. One of these reasons are responsible for the 'disappearence' of the Zodiak. Although there have been several new suspects in the last year or so, they have failed to close the case. After the bestselling book Zodiak was published*, it breathed new life into this cold case. The detectives were preparing to make an arrest when their main suspect died of natural causes while in jail. Arthur Lee Allen, a long-time resident of Vallejo, CA, had been the detectives' first choice as the Zodiak at the time of the murders. If Allen was the Zodiak he falls into one of the catagories above. He was diabetic and over the years his health was in a downward spiral. He died of complications of diabetes.

The Zodiac killer disappeared because he realized the police had his fingerprints although he claimed that he never left prints behind. The Zodiac used phrases that clearly told you he had a teaching profession. (As you can see) or ( as you see) is one example he has used in many letters. The talk of school children was also an important clue to his idenity. Arthur Leig Allen was cleared on this evidence and hand writing. I have a good idea of who it was and he was so kind to offer to help with the investigation.

Giving it a little though I came to my conclutions that the zodiac killer died before he wrote the bragging note letting everyone know who he was when died. I take this he had a sudden death or a violent one not related to his killings. A serial killer that was never caught would leave a bragging note so everyone finds out who fooled the police all the way to be release at their death date.
