The function of the kettle is to increase the heat of water, by the use of a perfectly placed element, to 100 degrees Celsius(boiling point). This is the temperature where the water will start boiling, destroying all harmful germs. The emergence of the kettle has replaced the boiling of water by fire in most areas and sectors of the world.

If you are referring to a hot water kettle then several key factors would apply.

First you need to decide whether you want electric or a stove-top model.

Capacity would be another thing to consider. How much water can it hold, and how much would you need normally when you would use the kettle.

Another thing to consider is how fast can it heat the tank of water. Not all kettles are the same. Some take longer to heat than others to get up to the heat you need.

(If electric...) Does the cord connect to the kettle which would prohibit you from pouring, or does it have a base that it uses to charge, so you can lift it free from the cord and move freely with the kettle, making it more portable and less of a hassle.

How easy is it to clean. Some models have heating elements inside the water tank. That limits the things you can heat in there. You can't put solids in there. The elements are coming in contacts with the liquid which could caramelize sugars in a liquids that isn't just plain water. Which would get on and possibly corrode the element. Some kettles have heating elements outside of the reservoir giving you more freedom to heat up things other than just water. If the heating elements are inside they are harder to clean. Over time your elements will become corroded anyways, and will start to not heat as fast. Requiring more cleaning.

Lastly and probably most important, how much for it? Electric kettles go from cheap to extremely expensive. how much are you willing to pay for it? If you are on a budget, that would be an important requirement. Keep it under your limit. Remember though, you get what you pay for. More money up front usually means less hassle later.

Those would be some of the most important requirements for a kettle.

You want a large enough capacity electric kettle, that heats the water to a boil in a short amount of time, that has the elements outside of the reservoir, offering easy cleaning, for not a lot of money.

But you would have to find our YOUR personal requirements for your usage habits. Different people will have different requirements.

Two definitions of a kettle.

1. A large cast iron pot for preparing soups and stews.

2. A pot (copper, cast iron or stainless steel) with a spout for heating water on the stove for tea or coffee, often called a "tea kettle".
