Ran into this same problem on my 1991 Grand Prix. Could drive it for awhile till it got up to normal operating temp. After that it would die again and would not start until cooled off. Turns out it was ignition control module. This part can be taken off and taken to an auto parts store to be tested. Once replaced, no more problems.
Turn on the A/C and then turn the ignition to the on position without starting the engine. The fan will be running if it is good.
Possible switch or lock cylinder
Engine running hot and cooling fan working to cool it down?
Grand ams have all sorts of problems, lol! Are you having problems with the car randomly not starting? Yes the design of the ignition system is notorious for problems, state what the car is (or isn't doing) & can advise further.
Check the fuel pressure, air cleaner, and ignition spark. One of these is not operating properly, and causing hard starting.
The light should be on before starting, and for 3 seconds after starting, as a bulb check.
how much to insall a ignition to a pontiac grand am se 1999?
Why won't the keys in the ignition turn on a 1992 grand marquis?
check all the fuses under the hood, if you are using a test light, do is with the ignition on, other than that, it could be the ignition module or coil packs
change ignition switch and/or tumbler
The ignition switch is immediately behind and attached to the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition lock cylinder is where you place the key to start your vehicle. If you are haveing problems with your vehicle not starting and or turning the key, more than likely you need to replace the ignition lock cylinder. It is common for these to go bad in GM vehicles.
follow the spark plug wire starting at the spark plug end, when you get to the other end its connected to the coil
