-17th century: The Montgolfiere brothers fly in their hot air balloons. They are the first men to fly. -Late 19th century: Otto Lillenthal builds many light gliders which he lauches from cliffs and successfully makes over 2000 flights. He is however killed in one. -1900's: the Wright brothers make numerous successful flights with gliders before becoming known for building the first powerd aircraft (Flyer I) on the 17th of December 1903 In Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.. -1906:The Breguet brothers from France fly what seems like a helicopter. It hovers, but isn't very maneuverable. -1914: The Italian army uses a fixed-wing aircraft over Libya for reconnaissance purposes. It is the first military airplane -July 25 1909: Frenchman Louis Bleriot flies his own built "Bleriot XI" across the English channel. -1927: Charles Lindburgh crosses the Atlantic from New York to France in his Ryan airplane nicknamed "the spirit of St. Louis". -1933: The jet Engine is invented by Frank Whittle. -1942: The Messerschmitt 262 "Schwalbe" (sparrow) is the first jet powered aircraft. It's is built in Germany. -1945: The Bell X-1 flown by Chuck Yeager is the first aircraft to fly at the speed of sound. -27 July 1949: The British de Havilland Comet is the first jet powered jet aircraft. -8 June 1959: The fastest aircraft ever built takes for the skies. It is dropped in mid-air from another aircraft (a B52). All 13 pilots to fly it are officially recognized as astronauts because they flew at an altitude superior to 100 km. -10 July 1968: The Soviet Mil Mi V12 is the largest helicopter ever built. Only prototypes are made. -December 31 1968: The Soviet Tupolev 144 "charger" is the first supersonic passenger aircraft. It is followed by the more successful BAE/Aerospatiale Concorede. -February 9 1969: The Boeing 747 "jumbo jet is the largest passenger aircraft. It maintains this record for over 35 years. This tile is currently held by the Airbus A-380. 1990's: unmanned aerial vehicles or UAV are built for the use of the US Army.
