Primarily by the fences that their owners (farmers and ranchers) put up to prevent them from running amok in the countryside. Cows are also limited by the way they are dependent on people to feed them and give them shelter, especially cows that live in the northern climates where there is deep snow for 5 to 6 months out of the year. They are also limited by the way they don't have the strong instinct like bison do to move around to different areas to graze if they were provided a vast area to graze on. Instead they spread out and eat different areas of the paddock then complain loudly they don't have enough food until the rancher comes and herds them onto fresh pasture/range.

Here is an expression with four terms:3 cows + 4 chickens + 6 cows - 2 chickensThe two 'cow' terms can be combined: 3 cows + 6 cows = 9 cowsThe two 'chicken' terms can be combined: 4 chickens - 2 chickens = 2 chickensSo after combining like terms, the expression is: 9 cows + 2 chickens .
Australian's terms for cows and cattle are pretty much the same as what North Americans and British call them: cows.

Because that is their natural habitat. Cows thrive on grass in grasslands (provided they are managed properly) because grass is a part of their natural diet.
