I think they are only important as a shared cultural experience. If you use a meme that is familiar to someone, you can compare the current situation to the situation in a popular movie or news story (or whatever the meme is based on), and get a laugh, or possibly even add some deep, poignant meaning to the situation (although this is much less likely).
