The titans ruled before the Olympians. Kronos and Rhea (titans) gave birth to many of the Olympian gods. Kronos was afraid that soon his children would overthrow him, so he swallowed them whole. Rhea saved Zeus by switching the child with a stone, and soon Zeus overthrew his father and cut open his belly to let the rest of his siblings out. They all overthrew the titans rule.
