  • Water is lost through the leaf surface, so small leaves help the plants retain moisture.
  • Plants have the ability to grow under a layer of snow, and to carry out photosynthesis* in extremely cold temperatures.
  • Some plants, like lichens (right), can survive on bare rock.

Tundra plants are adpated to the cold climate, in a way that they have smaller leaves and the leaves grow close together to the ground to retain temperatures. Also some plants grow a in a cup shape form so that they can obtain more sunlight in the center of the plant and it will stay warm.
