Wildland fires can be "Put Out" by several means
1.) Removing fuel (clearing fuel to bare mineral soil, burn outs)
2.) Removing heat (spraying w/ water)
3.) Removing oxygen (foam)
They Can Be Controlled By Calling The Fire Dept.. And They Will Handle It.
There is little one person can do, but your best chance is to have your local FD on the scene right away. What you can do is remove all flammable or combustible materials out of the area.
Water and sometimes, small fires can burn themselves out, but that's only if there's no dry or dead material nearby to add fuel to the fire
