Koi can reach a maximum of around four feet or 1.2 metres. At this size the fish may weigh 90lbs or approximately 40kg but this is unusualy large for a Koi.

Decent quality koi that are well maintained tend to reach an average maximum of perhaps 70-80cm but 80-100cm fish are not unusual. Generally speaking the trend amongst breeders is create bigger Koi.

Poorer quality fish may not have the genes to reach these sizes and they often only reach 30-40cm.

Many factors affect the growth rate of Koi such as food ( volume and quality) water quality and temperature.

Koi are separated according to their colours and patterns. Each type is given a different name. Some types have a tendancy to grow larger. This is often due to the fact that they are more closely related to the stronger wild carp from which all Koi are descended.
