How can a person prepare for hazardous weather well in advance?

Citizens can prepare in advance for thunderstorms by securing loose outdoor items so that they don't blow onto the house and cause damage. Citizens should also stay away from windows and doors and avoid using electrical equipment when the storm has started. It is also important to have cell phones charged in case of a power cut.

(so the lightning/thunder will not get attracted to you. 3-Also, it is important to not carry any flaslights or anything bright. Whenever I hear thunder, no matter how far away it might be, the first thing I do is turn off my computer and disconnect the power bar. I also turn off and disconnect other electrical appliances, especially the expensive ones like the television. These items can suffer significant damage if lightning hits a utility pole, even one that is some distance away, because the surge can travel significant distances through the wires. I shut the windows, but leave about half an inch open at the bottom. Then I stay away from all doors and windows, to avoid being struck by broken glass in the event of a direct or close hit. I also avoid the use of the telephone, again because of the possibility of a surge. Then I relax and wait for the storm to pass.

Common sense stuff like close the windows, and stay off of land line telephones, take your shower or bath after it passes. If the thunderstorm is forecast to be severe by the National Weather Service. Stay away from windows and be prepared for large hail and or damaging winds.
