Each type (cla…ss) of paper has a different 'basis weight' that is used to calculate it's 'weight'. Example 20# bond paper like you'd buy to run in your home printer or a copier. The 20 pounds is calculated based on 500 sheets of 17" x 22" paper. For 500 sheets of letter size (8.5x11) 'weighs' 5 pounds. For 20# bond, the equivalent gsm is 75.2 Grams per Square Meter.
