How can you remove scratches from discs?

The best way to remove scratches from discs such as Video Games, DVD'S, CD'S is to use a product called Brasso. Brasso is very cheap to buy and works very well. Most of the time it removes the scratch straight away. But if it doesn't go straight away do it a few more times until the scratch finally disappears.

Below is the method how you use it:

  • Get a piece of cloth.
  • Put a small amount of Brasso on the cloth.
  • Rub the cloth in circular motion over the disc.

The best fix i have found is to buy some special disk cleaner:

http://www.GameStop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=76125

I have the exact same kind, and it almost ALWAYS works! It also works on other disks. Or, if you don't want to spend money, run it under cold normal tap water (the back side of the disk), and then dry it with a 100% cotton rag.

You fix discs by using a kit with a series of abrasives, from course to light, to wear down scratches - step by step - to a smooth finish. Professional systems use multiple abrasives, consisting of different hardness and shapes (sharp to smooth). Regardless of product or system used, the key is to use a series of abrasives (more than one stage) to gradually bring the plastic back to a polished surface. If you want to remove all scratches on your disc, take a look at the 5-stage Scratch Pro repair kit. It will bring the disc back to its original shine and you will have a kit on hand to fix the next disc. Also do a search for scratch repair to see what is out there in your area. To do a targeted search, use the + sign in front of the search words +disc +scratch +repair

Sometimes cleaning the grime and fingerprints off of your game disk is all it takes for it to play, however scratches are for the most part permanent damage as, CDs transmit data from small pre-set indentations (which deep scratches can interfere with and glitch or crash the game).

However some minor damage to CDs can be repaired with some basic household things.

Never rinse the CD in water or try to heat it up/cool it down by any means. Use a squirt bottle, or slightly damp bathroom towel to moisten it's surface (breathing deeply on it may simply do the job), then use a course towel or rag (the fluffier the better) and dry it up all along the shiny side of the disk.

If that doesn't work, another proven alternative (which I've used successfully, but only recommend if the disk is being extremely stubborn), is to place a bit of toothpaste on it's shiny surface (no more than you'd put on a toothbrush) and spread it as thin as possible with your finger all over the shiny side, then with a slightly damp rag or towel wipe it all off.

If it works, then you should have a working, albeit somewhat minty, CD.

If it doesn't work, then you may have to find a replacement or make sure to invest into some disk protection (Gamestop offers this on any game they sell, 1$ for games up to 10$, 2$ for up to 25$, and 3$ for over 25$).

You can try getting a disc buffer, and I've heard washing it with toothpaste OR peanut butter helps, but other than that, there isn't much you can do.

you put toothpaste over the scratch and then wipe it off with a wet, clean rag and it should work
