A veterinarian can perform an abdominal ultrasound looking for fetuses (they tend to be very distinct), draw blood for a hormone level assay or (in late pregnancy) take an abdominal ultrasound to look for mineralized bone.

At home, you can watch for changes in behavior (less energy or more, less outgoing or more, more playful or less, more territorial, more aggressive, etc. - each female is different). You may notice the vulva remains large, as if the female were in heat and you might notice mammary development with secretions on the tips of the nipples.

However, female dogs can also have pseudo-pregnancies, where they appear pregnant but aren't. It takes a veterinarian to sort this out, and to treat a pseudo-pregnancy.
To notice that your dog is pregnant, is not as hard as it looks depending on the type of breed that it you will see diferrent changes time by time.

The bitches nipples will start popping up and you might see white which is the mothers milk.

She might start to have lumps on the side of her stomach which are her pups.

She will become less active, as soon start to run off to be online, and hide to relax before the arrival of her pups.

A bitch is pregnant for about 62 days.
