How come they can put animals to sleep and not put people to sleep?

Actually they do put people to sleep as well as animals....
Animals are put to sleep as a last resort to ease their suffering when no other means of treatment will work and their death is unavoidable..
People have much of the same options as with a Living Will a person can decide that in the event of an accident or illness that they would want to have their life support machines turned off rather then lay in a bed and suffer for weeks or months until death finally takes them..turning off the machines is then the same as putting them to sleep..
People also have the option of assisted suicide in cases of a terminal illness that will result in them suffering a painfull and lingering death...they would rather be put to sleep before they have to suffer such an ending..
Then there is Lethal Injection, the act of putting a person to sleep as punishment for committing capital murder...
