America joined the Allied Powers(Britain, France, Russia etc.) in 1917. President Wilson, as well as American citizens, were fed up with German U-Boats(short for German Unterseeboot meaning "undersea boat") attacking innocent merchant ships even though German had agreed to the Sussex pledge, that said Germany could not attack American ships without warning. Once America was in, the Germans were in for a big surprise. In 1915, Wilson launched a shipbuilding program, endorsed a brief-up of the of the army, and started the civilan Council of National Defense to study economic mobilization problems

The United States' entry into World War I added the needed impetus to push the Germans back. Without that entry, the war may have lasted much longer and turned out differently.
