Benedict Arnold's betrayal of the colonists had a big influence on America. It was an important event that fueled Propaganda in favor of the independence of the colonists. Arnold's defection to the British side of the fighting essentially became a rallying point for the colonists.

On the good side, Arnold had tremendous physical bravery and was a brilliant and cunning military commander. He also had a deep sense of personal responsibility, having personally raised his siblings.

On neutral ground; Arnold was tremendously ambitious, and expected his extraordinarily successful military career to be acknowledged and rewarded.

On the bad side, Arnold was extremely contentious and head strong, which caused him no end of conflict within the Continental Army and with Congress. He was profoundly concerned with his reputation and the way others treated him, sometimes rightly and sometimes wrongly believing that he was being conspired against and libeled. He was also exceptionally proud, perceiving slights from all directions and holding grudges for years.

Arnold was also exceptionally anti-French and anti-Catholic, even by standards of the day.
