According to the Official website of the Government of Prince Edward Island,
"The present name of Prince Edward Island was adopted in 1799 to honour then Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn - the father of Queen Victoria and younger brother of King George IV."
Queen Victoria named the province British Columbia. Prior to confederation, the province was divided into three districts: the Columbia district, the New Caledonia district and the Peace River Block. Given that the newly formed Government of Canada maintained ties with the British Monarchy, and given that during the 1870's there were still tensions between the British and the Americans over land, the Queen was letting it be known that it was British territory.
