Lieutenant Leonidas L. Polk fought in all the major campaigns of the Army of Tennessee. He undermined the leadership of General Braxton Bragg when Bragg commanded the Army of Tennessee. He did so by choosing to follow the orders of Bragg only if Polk believed the orders were correct ones. Polk had a close relationship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Polk believed it was his duty to protect the soldiers serving in the Army of Tennessee from poor generalship of Bragg. With his complaints, he went over Bragg's head to complain directly to Davis. He urged Davis to replace Bragg with General Joseph Johnston. Although Johnston was reluctant to replace his friend, He eventually replaced Bragg as the commander of the Army of Tennessee.
