In a Mayan dialect, Quauhtlemallan means 'place of many trees', and as we all know Guatemala is very rich in trees.
You are partly right, Guatemala is the land of many trees, but the word is not Mayan, its Nahuatl, which is the language of the Aztecs, or ancient Mexicans, Another Country who bears a name with Nahuatl roots, is Nicaragua, which means here ends Anahuac, which was the name of the Aztec empire.
The Republic of Guatemala is it's official name.

The two southern neighbors of Mexico are Guatemala and Belize.
The original capital city of Guatemala was Antigua. It was also called Guatemala, but in the early 1800s there were several earthquakes that caused the nearby volcano Agua to erupt. Only instead of erupting with lava it erupted a huge pocket of water flooding the entire city. Several natural disasters such as this caused the people to move the capital to a safer location in 1821. The old capital was renamed Antigua Guatemala (now called Antigua for short) and the new capital got the name Guatemala City.
