Born in San Francisco in 1876 he was a sailor, tramp, and gold miner before he became a writer. He used his knowledge of the Klondike in his book CALL OF THE WILD (1903) and WHITE FANG (1907). He wrote adventure stories as well and a political novel. His wife wrote his biography in 1921.
