The Dutch were the first Europeans to colonize New York City and its surrounding areas. They gave the settlement's port city the name New Amsterdam, and the greater province to which it belonged was named New Netherland.

In 1664, the British took control of New Amsterdam and New Netherland and renamed them New York, after James II, the Duke of York, who received the land as a gift from his brother, King Charles II. New Amsterdam became the City of New York, and New Netherland became the Province of New York.
