Because Hitler decided to invade Russia. The US immediately saw that a two-front war might seriously weaken Germany if they were to help the Russians. Also, they figured out that if Hitler managed to defeat Russia, he would get access to all the oil and raw materials he needed for his war effort and that he also would get access to enough manpower to match anything that the Allies could muster - and focus all that on victory in the West.
As it turned out, the US figured right. Against a very cautious progress of the Allied forces in the West (all Allied leaders and most generals were out to keep casualties to a minimum) the Russians counter-attacked the Germans ferociously, with little or no regard for their own losses.
