First of all settlers kept moving west and eventually they made the Native Americans stay west of the Mississippi River. Then the U.S. bought the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803 which extended from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Mexico gave Texas to the U.S., we got the Oregan Territory through a treaty with Britain, we got Utah because the Mormon Trail took lots of settlers, we got the Southwest from the Mexican-American War and California from the Gold Rush.
