when becoming a painter Van gogh was not famous, his talent was only recognised when he was dead. He is known through history as the man who mad his mark by using original yet tradition fetchers in his art work. Another thing is that he is famous for chopping off his ear and some say he did this for his assistant was screaming at him so much that he went mad and chopped off the ear he screamed in. But that must be looked into further and is not a solid answer.
