Nightly blackouts. Rationing of food, electricity, clothing, petrol etc. During the Blitz the children from big cities were taken away (evacuated) to live with complete strangers in the safer countryside. Even the parents did not know who the guardians were. The food menu had changed because of rationing which meant that they did not get the same weekly or monthly amount of food and they had to do some recipes that they might like. In other words they got what they were given. Also, to release men to the front line, women had to do jobs that they had never done before but now we don't have to make woman do men's jobs. Some men that were ether under 18 or over 40 that were not allowed to fight were known as the Home Guard (dads army). Non combatants were also sent to work down the coal mines (Bevin Boys).
