Henry VIII wanted to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope's refusal made Henry determined to remove the Church from its position of power in Britain so that he would never have to elicit permission from the Pope again. Once this was completed, the resulting split established him as head of the Church of England, forever removing him and future British monarchs from Papal influence.
Henry VIII's problem was that he needed to divorce Catherine of Aragon though the church didn't let divorces. He wanted a son so he just divorced anyways. Henry was excommunicated and he established the Church of England.
