Tanks allowed the Allies to cross no-man's land safely and to punch holes inside German lines, leaping trenches while bullets pinged off their hulls. Once the tanks hand broken through, the infantry could safely cross no-man's land and consolidate the tanks gains, without being mowed down by a hail of bullets from enemy trenches.

Why were tanks used in World War One?

They were an attempt to break the trench deadlock. There were no weapons to properly counter them at the time, but the tanks were constantly breaking down, and they were also very slow. Although tanks in World War 1 proved they could open a breach in the enemy's line, they were too slow and unreliable to carry through with an attack after the breach had been opened. WW 1 tanks were used to break the stalemate of trench warfare. Their success at doing so was limited. -answered by some guy

What made tanks effective in World War 1?

Tanks in World War 1 may have reduced Allied casualties. Germany built only a few tanks of poor quality, while Great Britain and France built thousands. Tanks were in their infancy and not properly used in World War 1. More British tanks were lost to breakdown than to enemy fire. They were captured by the Germans and used until they broke down and were recaptured, and then they were captured again. The French Renault Ft 17 was the best tank of the war, and it was also used by the US Army during and after the war, but in World War 1 the tank was not a decisive weapon, and the Allies would have won the war without it simply because they had more men and more materiel. Tanks were used in small wars in the 1920's and 30's, but they did not have a great effect until World War 2.

What effect did tanks have on world war 1?

Before the tanks arrived there was a stalemate in the warfare. Both sides had dug themselves (trenches)and in were in strong defensive positions. Thus when Lancelot de Mole (an Australian inventor) invented the tank, the British were able to break through the lines of the enemy and their trenches became useless in the face of the tanks (the heavybarbed wirewas easily overcome with the might of the tanks) . Once the tanks had overcome the defenses and cause panic and mayhem in the enemy lines it became easy for the infantry to move in.

Did poison gas help stalemate in World War 1?

The stalemate was already firmly established before poison gas was ever used. The leaders turned to using gas in an effort to break the stalemate. They hoped to wipe out all defenders of a section of the enemy lines, allowing them to break through over the gassed area and possibly begin to roll up the enemy lines to either side of the gassed area, and ultimately to break out of the trenches and resume a war of movement.
