They were an attempt to break the trench deadlock. There were no weapons to properly counter them at the time, but the tanks were constantly breaking down, and they were also very slow. Although tanks in World War 1 proved they could open a breach in the enemy's line, they were too slow and unreliable to carry through with an attack after the breach had been opened.
WW 1 tanks were used to break the stalemate of trench warfare. Their success at doing so was limited.

∙ 11y agoIn order to understand why tanks were invented, one must understand the nature of the fighting in WWI. It was trench warfare, where both sides were in strong defensive positions, and sent waves of men against the enemy, where inevitably there were horrific casualties. Tanks were invented by the British as a way of getting to and destroying the enemy trenches, while keeping the men protected from the murderous machine gun fire from the Germans.
