Northern Ireland only came into existence in 1922. A major factor in its origins that could be traced back to the 17th century was the Plantation of Ulster. This is when many people from Britain were given land in the north of Ireland, and they settled there. This established a strong Protestant population and a loyalty to Britain, which are part of what led to trouble and the creation of Northern Ireland and trouble since then.

In the early 20th century, there was civil unrest as many Irish republicans no longer wanted to be in the union with Britain.
However, many unionists DID want to remain.
The solution was to partition the island into 2 countries. The Irish Free State was created by Britain, allowing it partial freedom from rule. Any counties who disagreed with this were able to opt out.
6 counties in the north-east of the island opted out and remained part of Britain - this country is now Northern Ireland and remains a part of Britain today.
The Irish Free State slowly gained more and more powers and eventually became fully independent, becoming simply 'Ireland' (not to be confused with the island as a whole, which is also called Ireland), also known as The Republic of Ireland.
