People used the Mississippi River in the 1800s much as it is used today. However, at that time, the river was even a more major avenue of transportation. One major reason for this was that large cargoes could be shipped by boat both north and south along the river.
Before planes, trains and automobiles the use of boats and waterways had been the main way to move goods from one area of the country or world to the other. Considering the fact that in the early 1800s the United States pretty much ran from the Atlantic ocean to the Mississippi River, the river served as the West coast and movement up and down this water way conveniently ran the extent of the country from North to South. Another plus is the fact that the end of the Mississippi allowed for International Shipping without unloading and reloading a shipment.
It brought the Northern American cultures to that of Southern US; it gave water to over 15 billion people; and it didn't negatively affect the environment like the Transcontinental Railroad did.

For most of the 19th century, the Mississippi River was used as a means of transportation, even before New Orleans was sold to the US in 1803. Trade continued until the US Civil War. Then the Mississippi became a strategic river and both the North and South sought to control it. When the war ended, the river continued with enhancing trade and commerce.
People used steamboats for travel and steamboats were also uses for carrying goods, passengers, casinos, and traveling shows.
