People in ancient Rome worshiped many Gods. Zeus,Hera,Jupiter,Mars etc. They offered the god's anything from food to even people to please them. When sailing sailors use to offer the god of the sea some sort of gift, to bless them on the journey. They even also built statues and building in the honour.
To honor their major gods and goddesses, the Romans would build and worship at temples. Based on what they were seeking, a Roman would make offerings to a specific god/goddess (i.e. they would make offerings to Ceres if they were praying for a good harvest or to Venus if they were looking for love). Offerings would include animal sacrifices, wine, honey, cakes, etc. (once again, these would tend to be specific to the god/goddess; i.e. wine for Bacchus, grains for Ceres).
Household: To honor their household gods (Lares), the Romans would make daily offerings of food (such as cakes, wine, etc.) after their evening meals.
Dear Questioner,
Since the beginning of Humanity we humans are always fascinated by natural phenomenons. Be it Fire or Speedy winds or Lightning. They never fails to amuse us in any manner possible. When civilizations were in their prime and didn't know much about natural happenings they started to take those phenomenons as miracles and a work of some superior being. Scriptures were written defining that superior being. Faiths were held. And those faiths grew older and stronger with the tide of time and became religions as we know them today. Now it's always been in our nature that when ever we face a superior being we do all we can to please him/her. Because when we please him/her, they'll protect us and we'll always be in their good books! In the case of God, humans felt more fear because he was an unknown body. Nobody had ever seen him, and still he was capable of doing fearsome destruction and wonderful construction. And the one we can't see has far greater impact on our senses than any tangible thing in front of us. So we started pleasing him in the form of our prayers. But to whom they offered their prayers? Because God himself wasn't there in any form. So we humans started attaching objects of natural phenomenon to depict God which we know today as Deities. Now we had something we could relate God to. Every Ancient civilizations had their own unique way to depict and worship Gods. Hindus the oldest of civilized people on Earthworshiped their Gods in form of Idols. Which many oncoming civilizations followed for thousands of years. Every civilization created their own idols to worship their Gods. Remains of these idols are still found in many parts of world. And some wise or clever people who claimed to know God 'personally' helped them establish those deities in splendid Temples. And it became easier for us to please 'him/her'. God created us in him image but it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that we humans created God in our own image, and that's how we like to worship him. Now I am not saying that there is no God. I am myself a very spiritual man. All I am saying is that this debate, whether god exist or not, is eternal and there is no end to it.
