Political arguments influenced the establishment of the European Union (EU) to a great degree. After the Second World War, France and the other European Allied Powers remained suspicious and slightly threatened of Germany's motives to pick-up its industry and get back to rebuilding the country. You must understand that political arguments weren't recognized as political arguments back in the day. Also, they were intertwined with economic factors. Germany would get the right to start rebuilding its nation, but it had to give away a part of its sovereignty to other countries. It wouldn't have full national jurisdiction just yet. In order to secure France's motives from the other end so France wouldn't make misuse of the given power over Germany, both nations agreed to settle to a new community: The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) after the Schuman Declaration of 1950 and the Treaty of Paris in 1951. In the end, this was the predecessor of what we nowadays recognize as the European Union. Politically speaking, the EU was basically formed in order to prevent future wars (especially between France and Germany, the two powers, other than the UK, in Europe) through economic cooperation.
