The modern Republican Party started out as a third party. The Republicans opposed slavery in the United States and favored no expansion of slavery into the western territories. Members of the old Whig Party and Southern Democrats joined with members of the Free Soil Party and formed the Republicans in 1854.

Republican Party In 1854, the Republican Party was founded in Ripon, Wisconsin by those who opposed the extension of slavery (the buying and selling of Africans as forced laborers) into new territories. Their first official party convention was held on July 6, 1854 in Jackson, Michigan. The party gained enough support to elect their candidate, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), to the presidency in 1860. During the 1880s party members called themselves the Grand Old Party (GOP) beginning in 1876, a nickname that is still used by Republicans today. There have been nineteen Republican presidents. The Beginning Values of the GOP - (Late 1800's) Early Republican ideology was reflected in the 1856 slogan free labor, free land, free men. "Free labor" referred to the Republican belief in a mobile middle class that left the workforce and set up small businesses. "Free land" referred to Republican efforts to facilitate this spirit of entrepreneurship by giving away government owned land. The Party hoped that this rapid growth would help check, and eventually end slavery. The GOP Movement Continued - (Early 1900's) The GOP supported big business generally, high tariffs and generous pensions for Union veterans. The Republicans supported the Protestants who demanded Prohibition. As the Northern post-bellum economy boomed with heavy and light industry, railroads, mines, fast-growing cities and prosperous agriculture, the Republicans took credit and promoted policies to sustain the fast growth. But by 1890, the Republicans had agreed to the Sherman Antitrust Act (can't restrain trade among states nor countries) and the Interstate Commerce Commission (to protect the railroads) in response to complaints from owners of small businesses and farmers. The Transition of the GOP (Mid 1900's) The Current Republican Party The second half of the 20th century saw election of Republican presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush. The Republican Party, led by House Republican Minority Whip Newt Gingrich campaigning on a Contract with America, was elected to majorities to both houses of Congress in the Republican Revolution of 1994. Their majorities were generally held until the Democrats regained control in the mid-term election of 2006. In the 21st century the Republican Party is defined by social conservatism, an aggressive foreign policy to defeat terrorism and promote global democracy, a more powerful executive branch, tax cuts, and deregulation and subsidization of industry.

How is racism associated with the Republican Party?

The Republican party originally started out as a party which was against slavery (Abraham Lincoln was a Republican) and that is really the only main thing that Republicans have to do with racism. Claiming that the Republican Party is racist is unsubstantiated by facts (the current head of the Republican Party, Michael Steele is black). Other than their initial founding as an anti-slavery party, race has little to do with the Republican Party.
