It was destroyed during World War 2. Some people call that battle "Japan's Last Stand". 400 aircraft participated. an estimated 200- 300 warships also fought. The aircraft dropped the drop- bombers (soldiers who were holding a bomb and simultaneously skydiving). The drop- bombers dropped their bombs. The bombs destroyed the first deck. The Yamato was super- strong, but only against ships. It was useless against aircraft. So, after the first deck was destroyed, the Yamato targeted the closest warship, at 320 kilometers away. At that point, all the ships opened fire. They used torpedoes instead of actual guns. The torpedoes destroyed all the remaining decks. The Yamato split in two, much like the Titanic. Out of the 3,216 shipmates aboard the Titanic, only 216 shipmates (.67%) survived.

The Yamato was torpedoed and capsized. Before it was fully submerged, the powder went off causing it to explode.

There were to be 3 super battleships built in Japan during WW2; Yamato, Musashi, and the Shinino. After the Battle of Midway aircrew losses, the Imperial Navy decided they needed more carriers and NOT more battleships, consequently, they converted the last of the YAMATO class battleships into an aircraft carrier. How did the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano become famous?

Besides being the largest carrier sunk by a sub, she is mostly famous for being the 3rd sister of the battleship Yamato class. There were supposed to be three Yamato's: Musashi, Shinano, and the Yamato. The battleship Shinano was quickly converted to a carrier to replace the Midway losses. Prior to the conversion, even in Japan, the battleship was considered the primary warship.
