The Sioux Indians were nomadic people that typically followed the buffalo. This assured them that there would be food and clothing wherever they traveled. They traveled by foot until the Spanish introduced them to horses in the 1500â??s.

The Cheyenne were primarily a horse culture. So much so that the warriors were probably the most successful and accomplished cavalry that has ever existed. They also used travois pulled by horses and dogs, and walked.

Before horses were available dogs were used to carry small loads. The arrival of horses meant that much larger loads could be transported and opened up the Great plains to hunters who could follow the herds to obtain meat.

The travois was used to transport heavy gear such as fresh meat and hides, tipi covers, wounded or sick people or groups of young children. The travois was a simple arrangement of tipi poles attached to the horse's shoulders, the ends splayed and dragging on the ground behind - these ends were joined with leather straps or shorter poles to create a platform.

When moving camp many people chose to walk, leading their horses, rather than to ride.
