When the cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793 it allowed for cotton to be separated faster and easier then when it was previously done by hand. By speeding up this process, the cotton gin caused the expansion of cotton as a staple crop and increased the south dependency on slavery. While slavery had defiantly existed before the cotton gin, with slaves originally used to cultivate tobacco along with other crops, the cotton gin increased the need for slavery. In the north the increase in cotton as a result of the cotton gin advanced the textile industry which was the first a Americas factory industries, that would influence the advancement of later industries.
