There initially was no actual cost for ownership as you couldn't own a phone. The phones were rented as there were not any public telephone line networks or switchboard operators in place in the beginning. The cost back then was $10.00 a month which equates to about $215.00 a month (2012). Basically only the wealthy could afford this service.

After the telephone was invented people could comunicate with their friends and family so they were pretty happy. It was a good thing that the telephone was invented or people would have to travel all the way to their freinds house just to talk to them. Or they wouldn't be able to talk at all! That is how the telephone changed life in the 1800s.
