From what I know they we were given our last names by what our ancestors did in the fields of slavery. See if your ancestors were in thefields picking cotton, then your last name would be Cottonfields or Landings or Colton or Langstonfields or just Fields. Some are spelled differently, because people don't like to imagine or think of their ancestors when their last name is called. Some simply do not prefer to use those names.

My parents told me people came up with last names by if your last name was Smith then your ancestors maybe were a JackSmith. And when ur ancestors were alive they didn't have last names, if ur name was George and you were a fisherman then they would call you george the fisherman. And later there were too many names that were the same so someone thought of having ur last name based on what ur job was. And if ur last name is Williams then maybe ur ancestors job was to take care of lambs because WILLIAMS and LAMB it sounds alike. Also, If ur last name was Samson then ur son was Sam. Combined its Samson. COOL HUH! :)

Many surnames derive from physical features of the area in which a person lived, such as Hill, Dale, Rivers, Cove, and Groves.
