Seems that no matter how you serve ice cream to a child they'll end up wearing a good part of it. Give it to them in a bowl and they'll spill it over the sides. Serve it to them in a cone and it's dripping everywhere. Although kids love ice cream they're going to make a mess with it nearly every time. You can lessen the chances that they'll make a horrible mess, though, when you make ice cream cone holders for any type of cone. They're easy to make and allow the child to simply set the cone down, momentarily, anytime he wants. And, the cone holders are so easy to clean that you won't mind breaking them out every time your kids have ice cream cones.

Plastic canvas makes the perfect ice cream holder. In case you don't know what it is plastic canvas is a craft item that looks like a grid. Having a screen pattern, but being plastic instead of metal, the grid is found at most any craft store. It's available in assorted colors so you can easily choose colors that coordinate with your kitchen or dishes. The canvas is not expensive and is sold by the sheet or the roll. A sheet will only make one or two ice cream cone holders, however, so it's best to purchase it by the roll for this particular project. Plastic canvas is easy to bend and twist into other shapes. That's good because that's exactly what you will do to create the ice cream cone holders. Cut pieces of canvas so that they're approximately the size of half a piece of notebook paper. This is all you need to make each cone. Twist the canvas into a cone shape and glue in place. The type of glue you use is all-important. Although hot glue and other adhesives might work quickly many of them do not stand up to water or moisture. Check to see that the glue you use is waterproof. After gluing the edges of the cone together you have the basic pointed ice cream cone shape. But, the cone holder can't be the same size as the cone or it will be difficult to remove once it's in the holder. hold a cone up to the cone holder to see how tall or short to make it. Cut the plastic canvas cone so that it is approximately half the size of the cone without the ice cream in it. Cut pieces of non-cloth ribbon and glue them around the top area of the cone. Fold the ribbon so that half is on one edge, then it goes over the top edge, then the other half is affixed to the opposite edge. This will cover any raw edges and give the holders a more finished look.

Make a stand for the cone holder by cutting a circular disk. The disk doesn't have to be huge to hold the cone. Cut the disk from the plastic canvas, cover the edges with glued-on ribbon, then glue the disk to the point of the cone holder. It's helpful to cut a tiny piece off of the very tip to make it easier to glue onto the base. The finished cone holders are extremely useful when making a large amount of cones - like at a birthday party - and can be simply rinsed out when needed.

To make a cone holder for cones that feature a flat bottom use a piece of the plastic canvas. Twist it so that it makes more of a cylinder shape than a pointed cone. Glue the ends together, cover the raw edges, then glue on the bottom piece. Either cone holder is very easy to make, costs little, but will help keep down ice cream messes for years to come! Make a completely different type of cone holder by using laminated pictures. Choose the images you want from magazines, posters, calendars or other sources. Laminate them between two pieces of clear, adhesive shelf liner then twist them into the cone or cylinder shapes. These are great because they can have themes of cartoon characters, beach scenes and other summer-related images. Glue them together and attach the base. Instead of a plastic disk you can use lids, like one from a mayo jar or peanut butter jar, to make the base. You can embellish any of the cone holders by gluing on something like a plastic flower, a painted wooden shape or some other trinket. You'll find lots of suitable miniatures and other embellishments by browsing around your local craft store.
