The Titanic was divided into Sixteen watertight compartments that stretched from bow to stern. The Titanic's compartments were transverse meaning they went from top to bottom not side to side. the compartments were sealed off in the event of emergency by watertight doors which of course access ports. The Titanic's watertight design didn't carry to the Top deck as this was seen as in layman's terms overkill. The bulkheads for the most part reached up to E Deck instead of the uppermost deck. this meant the water clearance was as little as Ten feet above the waterline. This design was considered sufficient as Two compartments anywhere on the ship could be breached and she would remain afloat. Even if ALL of the first four compartments from the bow were somehow reached she would still float. although with a ten degree list. Even by today's standards the Titanic's design was quite impressive. Recent ships like the Concordia and Andrea Doria were only designed to stay afloat with any two compartments. And you must remember Titanic Didn't capsize and ALL her lifeboats were utilized. NO other ship since when damaged can that be said of.

Because the Titanic ‘s compartments were not capped at the top, water from the ruptured compartments filled each succeeding compartment, causing the bow to sink and the stern to be raised up to an almost vertical position above the water. Then the Titanic broke in half, and, at about 2:20 a.m. on April 15, stern and bow sank to the ocean floor.

Why did the Titanis sunk?

The Titanic sunk, because after it struck an iceberg, water flowed into it's first five compartments. As the ship got lower into the water, water overflowed from the fifth compartment into the sixth compartment, the sixth compartment overflowed into the seventh, until finally the ship was pulled under by the weight of the water in it's first five compartments. Also when it was about 19 degrees above the water, the back half of the ship broke off from the front half and that also led to it's sinking.

How many compartments could be filled with water and titanic still float?

The first four compartments of the Titanic could fill up with water and the ship would float. Unfortunately, the iceberg ripped open the first five compartments, and water from the fifth compartment pulled the ship under, so water from the fifth compartment eventually overflowed and filled the sixth compartment, the sixth into the seventh and so forth until the ship was pulled under by the weight of the water in it's forward compartments.
