The same way sugar cane and cotton did. It was was very lucrative commodity. The more you can harvest the more money you can make. The bigger the fields, the more slaves you would need. It was a cycle that only got bigger. Another reason is that when you bought a slave their children were yours as well so in reality slavery was going to grow no matter what.
