Clearly there is direct correlation between the two. The Black Death reached Europe by trading ships. As trade routes and pilgrimage routes were the only two major arteries of large-scale movement (people tended to remain in their own areas), this was the means by which the disease spread.

The Black Death (Bubonic Plague) started in China. The Silk Road, a massive trade route starting in China, not only carried trade items but carried the fleas and rats that were hosts of the Bubonic Plague. When the merchants and traders went to Europe carrying the infected fleas and rats, the plague broke loose.
