The medications and diagnostic tests available in the 70s were not as advanced as those available now. Far less was known about the disease then.

The recent several years have been called "the decade of the brain" because we learned SO much about neurology and neurochemistry. Because of this, medications and treatments are far more advanced now, giving patients more power and better lives.

In the 70s , treatment was focused on dampening the symptoms and isolating the patient from harm to self or others. Sadly, many of these treatments were too aggressive or not founded very well in research backed by evidence. Electroshock therapy was overused back then. It is still useful in some situations, and it is used much more wisely now so that the benefits are maximized while the harm or side effects are minimized. It can help alot with depressive features.

Patients vary widely in how functional or independent they can be. These days, the meds allow more people to function independently and live more independently. Many more are outpatients these days as a result. Some are able to work, walk their pets, go to the store, and everything, without being carried off by their thoughts.

The next decade is going to bring together neurochemistry, genetics, and advanced diagnostics and research that will advance treatment of schizophrenia even more- there is much to be optimistic about, and some people even believe that we may be able to reverse, halt, or even cure the disease.

How can you deal with a person who is schizophrenia and in denial?

Best thing I can tell you is get them into a mental health facility for treatment. If they are a functional schizophrenic, then it makes things harder in a sense. My dad went through this with my mother and eventually they divorced and she was placed in an assisted living facility by the state of CA because my grandmother couldn't take care of her any longer (due to her schizophrenia, she went blind for fear of eye surgery). Good luck!

What is jcaho?

JCAHO stands for Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. It is an independent body that inspects and certifies the facilities and protocols of hospitals, treatment centers, rehabs and similar organizations. Its purpose is to identify facilities that meet certain minimum standards. Although JCAHO certification is not mandatory, many secondary providers such as insurance companies will not deal as favorably with non-accredited institutions.
