The massive inflow of silver and gold into the Spanish economy, having nothing to do with real economic growth in Spain, led to inflation and to a structural trade deficit: the money enabled Spain to spend and import goods without the incentive of paying for those things by producing and selling goods, developing trade activities and thereby making money themselves.

When the gold and silver dried up, Spain was left with an economy that never really had learned to fend for itself, and it found that it now lagged far behind those countries that really had had to work to develop their economies and wealth.
