The battle took place 10 kilometres inland of Pevensey (where William landed) at a small area called Senlac Hill, it is today, simply known as 'Battle'. At 9am on the 14th of October the history changing, Battle of Hastings commenced. Harold positioned himself at the top of the hill, giving the Normans the disadvantage of fighting up hill. The Normans were forced to start the fight, one man had been granted permission to start the fight, as he ran up hill towards the enemy he sang. The man killed two Bretons before he too was killed. The archers were placed at the front of William's army, they were trying to shoot the Anglo Saxons from downhill, all that was happening was the arrows were hitting the two kilometre shield wall above. Harold placed his less armed people at the back of the army. For the first six hours of the battle the Normans could not penetrate the shield wall that had also proven effective against the Vikings. The Anglo Saxons were able to keep the horses from breaking through the shields by banging their axes or swords against the shields to scare them off. Even though Harold didn't have any horses and his men were injured and tired, it looked like the Bretons were going to win. Some of the untrained fyrd from Harold's army made the fatal mistake of chasing some Norman's that were retreating. As Harold was fighting with his men, he could not keep order with his soldiers. The ones that ran away were cornered and killed. This forced the less armed men to come foward to the front line. William's men came up with the tactic to pretended to retreat, the Anglo Saxons became excited and chased them, many more Bretons were killed due to this impulsive decision. The remaining Normans made one large group and worked out that they didn't need to penetrate the shield wall to kill the Anglo Saxons, the archers simply had to lob their arrows up hill and over the shields, from the back of the army, this is how Harold Godwinson was killed, stories say that an arrow shot him through the eye. Word spread through the remains of the Harold's army that their leader was dead, moral began to lower and the fighters became weaker, soon the Bretons couldn't hold the shield wall against the final charge that the Normans threw at them the Anglo Saxons were overthrown. William the Duke of Normandy became, William the Conqueror. Harold's body was dismantled and thrown into the sea
