During WWI men ages 18 to 45 were required to join the armed forces, when this happened a need for workers opened up. So the women stepped up along with African Americans and worked in place of the newly enlisted men. This showed men in the United States that women were just as capable as men at just about every thing. So when the war ended the 19th amendment was ratified and gave women the right to vote.
