The iron age started around 1200 BC. There were people who used iron back around 5000 years ago, but they didnt use it as a primary metal. When they did make it 5000 years ago, they would hit the iron against a rock to form the shape that was needed. But during 1200 BC they would put it in a fire just to get it hot enough so that if they hit it with a hammer, it could take a shape. They got iron from digging it up just like we do today. Alot of the Earths crust is filled with iron so it is easy to get. But then again iron wasnt as strong as bronze until they made steeled iron. Hope this helped.
